ABOUT

My Teaching Philosophy

- Natalie K. Simmons -

If you love your job, you will never have to work a day in your life. I love teaching. A famous Existentialist, A.S. Neill, once said “Childhood is not adulthood; childhood is playing and no child ever gets enough play. The Summerhill theory is that when a child has played enough he will start to work and face difficulties, and I claim that this theory has been vindicated in our pupils' ability to do a good job even when it involves a lot of unpleasant work.” I believe this statement is true. Learning should involve playing and laughter. I believe that work can be made fun. I want my classroom to be filled with fun, freedom, and safety.

I enjoy transforming ordinary lessons into unorthodox learning. I want my classroom to be filled with hands on learning. For example, if I student is learning about a certain time period, I feel they should learn what that time period did for fun. The Victorians loved to dance, so when learning about the Victorians students should dance. This allows the students to move and learn at the same time. Dancing, cooking, dressing up, and nature walking are all aspects of hands on learning that I will bring to my classroom.

I also want to bring freedom to my classroom. Our students should feel free to learn, make decisions, and grow. They should feel free ask questions and state their opinions. I want to question their beliefs and for them to question mine. I want them to believe something because they believe it, not because their parents or friends do. I want them to be free to know themselves. In my classroom students should be able to find themselves and be introduced to choices. These students are our future. I want them to make their own rules and abide by them all year. I want to share myself with my students and create an environment where they feel safe enough to share themselves with me and the rest of the class.

My biggest goal for my future classroom is for it to be a safe place to learn and grow. I want my classroom to be inviting to my students. I want them to wish to be there. It should be a place where they are safe to think, ask, and learn. I will make students feel safe by opening up myself and support them in anyway I can. I want to incorporate many different aspects into their learning of English, such as theater, art, and maybe even philosophy. I will attain this goal first by the appearance of my classroom. I will make it very colorful to inspire thinking, but not so bright that it is blinding. I want my classroom to be filled with student work, art, music, and pieces of the outdoors such as plant life. I wish the appearance of my classroom to touch every learning style as possible. I will continue to create my ideal environment with the classes that occur in the classroom. I will hold my classes with the desks in a circle to encourage discussion. The most worthwhile discussions only occur when the students feel safe to contribute. I will have rules posted in my classroom that state everyone should be respectful and kind to each other. I will be an enforcer of these rules. I will encourage students to think and contribute constantly.

I will give my students my all and will expect the same in return. I am determined to teach students English not teach English to students. I want to teach people, not a subject. I want to create a safe, free, and fun learning environment while making lasting connections. I love people and I want to pass this love of people and learning on to my students.
